"I never wanted to be 'in fashion.' Because if you are 'in fashion' then you can always be out."
-Ralph Lauren
Said perfectly. Hense my reason for never following trends. I know what works for me and I stick to it. I find that a much less fickle and much more eloquent mode of expression. Of course one's style will be influenced and inspired differently over time and will be changed and molded as such, but the roots should stay the same.
Therefore, I have a few essentials. Some pieces are untroubled by the sands of time; ever confident, ever relevant.
Brogues. The talisman of the shoe catalogue has traveled from 19th century Ireland to 21st century America with ease. They work with a suit or jeans or shorts. They work with a guy or a girl. Their versatility leads directly to their perpetuity.
A Blue Blazer. Every man (and woman, in my opinion), should own a perfect-fitting blue blazer. Pick a classic lapel, nothing too affected, and you'll be happy to wear it in the summer on the beach or in the winter with a sweater for years and years to come.
The Trench. A proper-fitting trench coat can't lead you astray. Whether its pouring down buckets or there's just a bit of a chill, the unisexual appeal of the trench makes it a timeless classic.
Cords. I love some good corduroys. Neither Holden Caulfield nor Ferris Bueller (two guys who I imagine loved corduroys) would look out of place wearing a pair of their cords today. Lighter in the summer or heavier in winter, the everlasting appeal of the corduroy pants will never be lost on me.
It is my goal to, in ten years, look back at what I'm wearing now and not be mortified. By sticking to what I know and what I love, I think this can be achieved.
Always live in the now. But when it comes to what you wear, live the present with a view from the future.
